Skinny Dips & Camping Trips Zinc Sunblock (500ml)
Zinc sunblock offers benefits like broad-spectrum protection against UVA/UVB rays, gentleness on sensitive skin due to its anti-inflammatory properties and immediate effectiveness upon application. It acts as a physical barrier on the skin, is less likely to cause irritation and is often considered environmentally safer than some chemical suncreens.
Zinc oxide protects against both long-wave (UVA) and short-wave (UVB) ultraviolet rays, which helps prevent sunburn, premature aging and skin damage. It works by creating a physical barrier on the skin’s surface that blocks UV radiation from penetrating, rather than being absorbed like chemical sunscreens. This physical barrier starts working as soon as it is applied unlike chemical sunscreens that require about 20 minutes to become effective.
It is generally non-irritating and is a good option for those with sensitive, reactive or acne-prone skin because it less likely to cause allergic reaction and does not clog pores. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe the skin. Its gentle composition makes it a great choice for children’s delicate skin. Zinc oxide is also not absorbed into the bloodstream making it a safer option for children and pregnant women compared to some chemical filters.
Non-nano zinc oxide is often considered a more “reef-safe” and environmentally conscious choice as it is believed to have far less impact on marine eco-systems when we choose to share the water with marine life than a lot of chemical sunscreen ingredients. It is also a very stable ingredient that maintains its protective qualities in sunlight without degrading.
I am one of those very unlucky people that just has to think of going out in the sun and I will start to burn, however I find that most sunscreens leave my skin really itchy and red. So I tried making sunblock using zinc oxide instead and I swear by it, I follow the rules for our harsh Australian environment, I stay out of the sun as best I can, I wear sunglasses and a hat, I sit in the shade and I don’t tend to venture out in the hottest part of the day (and the same goes for my kids) but this lotion has never let us down and it’s extra bonus is that is doesn’t leave skin greasy so you don’t pick up every speck of dust in a 100 mile radius!
I do also have a spray-on option that I am working on that will hopefully be available in December of 2025…
Key Ingredients
Zinc Oxide
Zinc offers benefits such as broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection, is a gentle ingredient perfect for sensitive skin and provides immediate action by physically reflecting and scattering UV rays rather than absorbing them. It is non-irritating and non-comodegenic (doesn’t clog pores) so can also be used on the face.
Zinc sunblock starts working the moment it’s applied, providing instant sun protection without a “wait-time” for activation. It is water-resistant and does not degrade when exposed to sunlight, offering durable and reliable protection. Unlike chemical sunscreens, Zinc Oxide forms a physical barrier on the skin’s surface, physically blocking and scattering UV radiation.
Red Raspberry Seed Oil
Whilst not suitable to be used as a stand alone ingredient for full sun protection Red Raspberry Seed Oil makes the claim that it can help to protect against UVB rays, we add it to our sunblock lotion for the extra benefits it provides on top of it’s claim for minimal sun protection. Its high antioxidant content, including vitamins A and E helps to protect against environmental damage, it helps to reduce redness, irritation and inflammation and it is deeply moisturising so can help improve skin elasticity. We love it because it is so great for our skin but is also very lightweight so we still get all the goodness of a body lotion with the sunblock properties of zinc oxide and it doesn’t leave your skin greasy or ‘slimy’ with the addition of water as is the case with a lot of commercial products.
How Do I Use It?
Dispense 1-2 pumps at a time of product depending on whether you are covering the face or body and smooth over skin. Using circular motions massage cream into the skin until the white film disappears indicating that the zinc has formed a barrier over skin. Reapply every 2 hours when working or playing in direct sun to ensure that an effective amount of product is on the the skin at all times. Don’t forget to include other sun protection measures such as a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and find shade during the hottest part of the day.
Ingredients:
Chamomile Water, Aloe Vera Juice, Zinc Oxide, Grapeseed Oil, Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Vegetable Emulsifying Wax, Glycerine, Gluconolactone [and] Sodium Benzoate (preservative)
